a. “Can you drive a car?”, I said to Rahim.

I asked Rahim if he could drive a car. 

b. The stranger asked me if I could tell him the way to the post office.

The stranger said, “Can you tell me the way to the post office?”

a. Anita said, “I do not know the boy.”

Anita said that she did not know the boy.

b. Rahim said that his mother had been suffering from fever.

Rahim said, “My mother has been suffering from fever.”

4. H.S.L.C. 2018

a. Rahim said to me, “Do you know the man standing at the gate?

Rahim asked me if I knew the man standing at the gate.

b. The young man told me that he had come from Jorhat to work in Guwahati. 

The young man said to me, “I have come from Jorhat to work in Guwahati.”

a. She asked me why the teacher had punished me.

She said to me, “Why has the teacher punished you?”

b. Anita said to Ravi, “Please lend me your pen.”

a. Rashid asked me if I knew Rahim.

Rashid said to me, “Do you know Rahim?”

He asked me why I had done that.

He told me that he knew me. 

(ii) He asked me if I could help him. 

He said to me, “Can you help me?”

7. (i) My friends tell me, “You will be a great man one day.

(ii) The teacher advised Reba not to waste her time. 

The teacher said to Reba, “Do not waste your time.”

8. (i) He said, “I shall post the letter tomorrow.”

He said that he would post the letter the next day. 

(ii) The boy asked me if I knew him.

9. (i) I said to him, “Where are you going at this time?”

I asked him where he was going at that time.

(ii) He told me that he would return my book the next day.

10. (i) Minati said to me, “My father has gone to Shillong.

(ii) The man asked me if I was free at that time. 

The man said to me, “Are you free at this time?”

11. (i) He said to me, “Where did you go yesterday?”

He asked me where I had gone the day before. 

(ii) My brother asked him if he played football. 

My brother said to him, “Do you play football?”

(iii) He said, “What a fool I am.”

He exclaimed with regret that he was a great fool. 

12. (i) Father said to me, “Do as I do.”

Father asked me to do as he did.

(iii) He suggested that we should go for a walk.

13. (i) The teacher said to her, “Spell the word ‘naughty.”

The teacher asked her to spell the word ‘naughty’.

(ii) He said to me, “May God bless you.”

He wished me that God might bless me. 

(iii) Ramen asked him when he would pay the debt. 

Ramen said to him, “He said to me, “will you pay the debt?”

(iv) The woman asked me whether I had passed the HSLC Test Examination.

The woman said to me, “Did you pass the HSLC Test Examination?”

14. (i) He said to me, “I was not present in the meeting last Sunday.”

He told me that he had not been present in the meeting the previous Sunday. 

(ii) She said to us, “Good morning, my friends.”

She wished her friends good morning. 

(iii) My father asked me why I had not gone to school the day before.

My father said to me, “Why did I not go to school yesterday.”

(iv) My friend suggested to me that we should arrange a picnic the following week.

My friend said to me, “Let us arrange a picnic next week.”

15. (i) I said to him, “Can you lend me ten rupees?”

I asked him if he could lend me ten rupees. 

(ii) The teacher wished that God might bless me. 

The teacher said to me, “May God bless you.”

(iii) My friend said to me, “Let us go for a picnic.”

My friend proposed to me that we should go for a picnic.

(iv) The boys said that they were playing. 

The boys said, “We are playing.”

16. (i)My friend said to me, “I bought the car yesterday.”

My friend told me that he had bought the car the previous day. 

(ii) I said to my wife, “Let us enjoy the evening in the park.”

I proposed to my wife that we should enjoy the evening in the park.

(iii) He asked me when I had gone there. 

He said to me, “When did you go there.”

(iv) The members of the party prayed that their leader might live long.

The members of the party said, “May our leader live long.”

17. (i)He said to me, “I know you.”

He told that he knew me.

(ii) The teacher advised the students to be kind to the poor. 

The teacher said to the students, “Be kind to the poor.”

18. (i) Crito said to Socrates, “Is there anything else?”

     Crito asked Socrates if there was anything else. 

(ii) “May the Gods help me in my journey from this to that other world.” said Socrates. 

Socrates prayed that the Gods might help him in his journey from that to that other world. 

(iii) He suggested to me that we should go to play then. 

He said to me, “Let us go to play now.”

19. (i) He said to us, “Did you finish the sums?”

He asked us if we had finished the sums. 

(ii) “Let us have a talk,” he said to them. 

He proposed to them that they should have a talk.

(iii) The man said with pride that he was going very clever. 

The man said, “How clever I am!”

(iv) They told us that we should meet them.

They said to us, “Let us meet them.”

20. (i) He said to me, “What a beautiful picture it is!”

He exclaimed with wonder that that was a very beautiful picture.

(ii) She asked me where I was going. 

She said to me, “Where are you going?”

(iii) He said to me, “Don’t do it.”

He asked me not to do that. 

21. (i) The man said to me, “I do not know you.”

The man told me that he did not know me. 

(ii) I asked the boy if he had answered all the questions. 

I said to the boy, “Have you answered all the questions. 

(iii) The girl said to me, “I do not know how to swim.”

The girl told me that she did not know how to swim. 

(iv) The examiner asked me if I was a regular student. 

The examiner said to me, “Are you a regular student?”

22. (i) Mother said to us, “Always speak the truth.”

The mother advised us to always speak the truth.

(ii) The old man said that I might prosper in life. 

The old man said to me, “May you prosper in life.”

(iii) The teacher said, “Fortune favors the brave.”

The teacher said that fortune favors the brave. 

(iv) The man asked me what my name was. 

The man said to me, “What is your name?”

23. (i) The teacher wished that God might bless me. 

The teacher said to me, “May God bless you.”

(ii) The teacher said, “Have you all understood the question?”

The teacher asked if they all had understood the question. 

(iii) He said, “Goodbye, my friends.”

He bade his friend goodbye.

24. (i) He said, “This book costs rupees twenty.”

He said that that book cost rupees twenty. 

(ii) Raju asked me if that was my pen. 

Raju said to me, “Is this your pen?”

(iii) Mr. Dutta bade his friend's goodbye. 

Mr. Dutta said, “Good bye, my friends.”

25. (i) The teacher said to us, “You should keep strict discipline to prosper in life.”

The teacher told us that we should keep strict discipline to prosper in life. 

(ii) The girl exclaimed with surprise that it was a very big and black snake. 

The girl said, “What a big and black snake it was!”

(iii) He told us that his father had been suffering from for a long month. 

He said to us, “My father has been suffering from fever for a long month.”

26. (i) My friend said, “If you behave like this, I will leave your company.”

My friend said that if he behaved like that, he would leave his company. 

(ii) I said, “I shall not do anything that may offend you.”
